Depending on your budget, you may choose to go the route of recycling. In the same way pieces of furniture can be re-purposed inside the home, appropriate items can be recycled outdoors to build a fence. An old set of burglar bars, door or gate are perfect examples of items that can be recycled. Allow your creativity to take charge and involve the entire family in the design process. Whether you are a fan of contemporary design, traditional, or somewhere in between, choose fencing materials based on the specific needs of your family, and of course, your budget.

Here are a few materials used in privacy fence design ideas that are worth considering.

1. Wood

Reclaimed wood offers an exciting opportunity to build your own fence. If time allows, have each family member work on carving out a few pieces of wood to build a picket fence. For the younger members of the family, involve them in the painting part of the process. Use stencils to create various designs of plants and animals for a more artsy design. If you enjoy motivational quotes, feel free to paint or draw words that carry a special meaning for the members of your family on the fence. Palm prints are also fun elements to include. Although picket fences are traditionally white, there are no specific rules where that is concerned. Get creative with your color choices and mix and match colors to your liking.

2. Iron

Add elegant and architecturally interesting elements to your home using wrought iron fencing. The fencing can be mounted atop a concrete, stone or brick base, or planted directly into the ground. Iron fencing is durable, but offers little privacy. Use large trees, shrubs and flowers alongside your iron fence to keep out prying eyes. If you are trying to find pieces of iron to recycle, iron headboards and footboards from old beds are a great substitute. These recyclable items can be found at your local garage sale or junk yard.

3. Chain link

Chain link fences are very common and can be customized to fit your privacy needs. Depending on the location of the fence, you may need to plant a few trees for added privacy. Strips of board may also be used as well. Chain link fences are easy to erect and are extremely durable.
