Rules are meant to be broken, right? Well, there are a lot of rules when it comes to interior design, many of which have become accepted as the norm. However, they don’t all have to be adhered to in order to have a beautifully-designed space. If you are new to designing, here are some guidelines that will help you create an appealing home.

For starters, sketch out a floor plan of the area you will be working in. This will help to give you a clear idea as to what goes where, and you will be able to better map out the furniture and materials you will need. Use this stage to also plan out the best order tasks should be completed in to prevent headaches once you get started. Take notes on the room’s dimensions, where outlets, phone jacks and cable ports are located, along with the placement and size of the windows.

The next step in your interior design process is to determine what you want the focal point in the room to be. This could be a piece of heirloom furniture that has sentimental value, a fireplace, the entertainment center, etc. This step is important because the placement of every other item in the room depends upon what the focal item is, and where it will be located.

It is a good idea to purchase larger pieces of furniture and design around them. This will help make the process of purchasing accent pieces easier, because you will be able to determine which colors and patterns work well in the space.

When arranging furniture, try to lay it out in such a way that pathways are created and not obstructed. It will be difficult for your room to have  proper flow if you have to constantly navigate around furniture to walk through the room.

Do some research to find out what you like and what it is you don’t like in terms of interior design. Take the time to really figure out your style. Tear out pages from design magazines and bookmark websites if necessary. Save pictures to your computer for reference. Look for things you can recreate in your upcoming project.  Of all the tasks related to interior design, this is can be the most fun.

Although fun, interior design can be overwhelming at times. Armed with these tips, however, decorating your home should be as enjoyable as you imagined it would be.
